While driving back from the Missouri the other day I was bragging about how I have never hit a deer. “I always look in the ditches and try to see them, their eyes, or movement”, I decisively stated. The stretch of road from Lincoln MT to the Clearwater junction on hi way 200 is deer central. Shortly after bragging about my elusive deer missing ability there was a herd of elk in a field next to the road. As we were looking at them a big mule deer bombed out of the ditch onto the road opposite of the elk and tried to end my no deer hitter!
“Holy Bleep”, only I didn’t say bleep , I hit the brakes and the deer turns away at the last second and spares us his and my agony.
Never say never. Fishing can be the same. As soon as you think you have something figured out to the Nth degree, a wrench gets tossed into the mix. I try not to set myself up to fail though like some guys. If you say to your guests “Guys its going to be epic, today should be the best fishing ever!” You have all ready dug a big hole to climb out of. What if your’ guys can’t set the hook, can’t cast, are blind, are hungover, or all of the above?
Regardless if 100 fish eat the fly it might not be the best day ever if they don’t stick any of them. If all the stars are lining up and it looks like it could be the epic of epic days and you got a fool proof program going, just lay low and say today has the makings of a good day lets see what we can do? If things work out and the fish are sticking there are hi fives happening and all is well. If not then we’ll go get em tomorrow!
The Mo is the only game in town by the way. It got hot here in Missoula and we are in full runoff for a while now, check out the flows on the root. bitterroot flows The Missouri will be kind of busy with windows of real good midge/ bwo fishing and the fishing under the indicator rocks right now! We’ll hopefully see you there Amigos!!
