Well its October and it finally cooled off thank God! Fresh snow in the mountains. My 2 good friends Patch and Craig Pablo have been doing some steel head fishing in Idaho and have stuck some chrome on their spey rods, I need to learn this!
My kids want to go duck hunting/ anything hunting and I’m looking forward to some time with my family again. I’m extremely fortunate to have an outfitter who keeps me working through out the year so I can spend time in the upcoming off season doing fun stuff.
We had a great group of guys from New Jersey that we always look forward to fishing with. My boat stuck a monster brownie on the Clark Fork that was just an awesome fish. These big, old trout over 26 inches don’t make themselves available to be caught very often but this big boy came up and ate a stonefly nymph in a riffle. I haven’t seen a brown this big here and you know he sits down in a dark pool eating fish most of his life and has to move to spawn. I’ve caught 40 inch B run steel head and 25 inch A run steelhead and this fish had more mass and length than a lot of B run steelies I’ve put in the net. This particular fish was real healthy, not a mark on him and probably at least 12-15 years old. I was stoked to net this thing and real happy for Russ who played it perfect for 15 minutes or so.
The hopper bite is about gone, dropper fishing was good today and we had some nice BWO and mahogoney mayflies out and stuck some nice rising fish later in the day eve though it was real sunny.
I’ll be on the Mo for the next few weeks and I always look forward to getting over there in October.
It’s been an interesting, smokey, buggy, big fish year and I’m hoping to finish it out strong.
